| General Information
|
Buri Ram is one of the north-eastern provinces of Thailand and is 410 kilometres from Bangkok. The name Buri Ram means City of happiness. The neighboring provinces are Sa Kaeo, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Maha Sarakham and Surin. To the south-east it borders Oddar Meancheay of Cambodia. Like many of Isan provinces, it was once part of a great Khmer Empire, as evident in the Khmer ruins and large population of ethnic Khmers.
This province has a rich historical legacy that can still be visited today. Scattered across the province are in excess of 100 monuments and archeological sites, from both the Khmer and Dvaravati periods -- many of which can be easily visited from either the provincial capital of Buriram or the small town of Nang Rong. While some of these are no more than a couple of rocks in a field, the province is also home to some outstanding Khmer monuments, including, the atmospheric Phanom Rung -- easily Thailand's most stunning Khmer monument.
Monuments aside, the eponymous provincial capital holds little to attract most travellers but does make a convenient base for rural exploration to sites such as Phanom Rung and nearby Prasat Muang Tham.
There are a large festival takes place at Phanom Rung in April and it is worth getting to if you're passing through the region at that time.
