OVERVIEW |
Chiang Khong is a district in the northeastern part of Chiang Rai Province, northern Thailand. This small district on the bank of the Mekong River is located 53 km. east of Chiang Saen and 114 kilometres northeast of Chaing Rai provincial capital. The neighboring districts are (from the southeast clockwise) Wiang Kaen, Khun Tan, Khun Tan, Phaya Meng Rai, Wiang Chiang Rung, Doi Luang, Chiang Saen of Chiang Rai Province. To the east is Bokeo provinces of Laos.
Straight across the swirling waters of the Mekong River from the Lao town of Huay Xai, Chiang Khong is primarily known for being one of the more popular border crossings for backpackers and independent travellers travelling to and or from Laos.
Chiang Khong runs in an east-west direction along the southern bank of the Mekong River. The river's bank is lined with a bunch of guesthouses and small restaurants. Guesthouses and backpacker cafes aside, Chiang Khong is a typical small Thai town . Wandering away from the riverfront and you could be pretty much anywhere in Thailand.
While many view the town as nothing more than an overnight stop to or from Laos, Chiang Khong has a few outlying attractions in its own right, including waterfalls and rapids. Both of which can be visited on short trips organised at your guesthouse, or independently if you have your own transport. If you have the time, or by chance are not going to Laos, you could easily spend a couple of days.

Climate
The north of Thailand is popularly known as a cooler place. The reality is that in the hot summer months, Chiang Rai can be just as uncomfortably hot as much of the rest of the country, if not more so. However, from December to February the nights can be cool enough to require a jacket, so the appellation is not totally undeserved.
The cool season runs from December to March, although there's usually just one week in December when temperatures are actually comfortable. The heat starts to increase soon after the new year and by April or May it can be almost unbearably hot and humid. During the rainy season the downpours can be extremely heavy, but generally only last for an hour or so in the afternoon.
