NONTHABURI
OVERVIEW |
| Lying 20 km north of Bangkok, Nonthaburi town sits on the eastern bank of what is a relatively new addition to the Chao Phraya River. If you glanced at a pre 15th century map of Bangkok the riverine route between Bangkok and Nonthaburi followed a wide western loop. In the interests of security, trade and conveniance work was started on a canal to bypass this loop in 1551 but work was not completed until the middle of the 16th century. As a result of this undertaking, Khlong Aom as it is known is the true Chao Phraya, whilst what most like to think of as the Chao Phraya is actually a glorified khlong!
Located at the northern terminus of the Chao Phraya River Express, Nonthaburi is within an easy day trip distance of central Bangkok. Although the provincial capital has worthwhile attractions in its day and night markets and the atmospheric Wat Chaloem, the real reasons for visiting lie furter afield. From Nonthaburi wharf, trips can be made to reasonably authentic floating markets and to the fascinating Mon island of Ko Kret whilst for those with a bit more time (and money) on their hands a homestay in a traditional Thai house can provide a memorable and unique angle on your trip to Thailand.
Nonthaburi is also home to a number of major Thai prisons, of which Bang Khwang and Khlong Prem are the most infamous. For those intent on visiting foreign prisoners, the embassies are a good place to start.
