| Pattani is located on the east of the Gulf of Thailand. Pattani is a small
Province among the five so-called Southern Border Province. Blessed with
irresistible charms. It is rich in historical significance worth studying.
Including impressive customs and traditions. as well as natural scenic beauty
of its streams and falls.170 kms. long golden beaches along the gulf and
wonderful hospitality of the Pattani people. All of which combine to draw
thousands of visitors to the province annually Because of its location on the
coast with two major rivers running through it. The Pattani and the Saiburi
River. Most of the local people not surprisingly are engaged in agriculture and
fishery . The Province boasts docking facilities for both large and small
vessels. It is also in an industrial Zone to Produce seafood of and now being
developed into a center for the production of Muslim food for domestic
consumption and export under the Halal specifications.

History
Historically, Pattani was the centre of the semi-independent Malay Pattani kingdom, but paying tribute to the Thai kingdoms of Sukhothai and Ayutthaya. After Ayutthaya fell in 1767 Pattani gained full independence, but under King Rama I it again came under Siam's control. In 1909, it was annexed by Siam as part of Anglo-Siamese Treaty of 1909 negotiated with the British Empire. Both Yala and Narathiwat were originally part of Pattani, but were split off and became provinces of their own.
There exists a separatist movement in Pattani, which after being dormant for many years erupted again in 2004. Grievances cited include long-standing prejudice and discrimination against Pattani Muslims by Thai Buddhists, including forcible repression of local language and script, as well as religious practices. As such, the revolutionary movement has increasingly taken on Islamic overtones, but remains largely isolated from global Islamic militancy, with the exception of proposed cooperative ties with neighboring Malays. |

| Pattani is one of the four provinces of Thailand where the majority of the population are Malay Muslim, making up 88% of the population. The Pattani Malays are very similar in ethnicity and culture to the Malays of Kelantan, Malaysia. |

GETTING IN - OUT

*Car : The town of Pattani is about 1,055 kilometres from Bangkok. Visitors can use highway no.35 (Thon buri - Pak Tho) for about 90 kilometres, then turn left to highway no.4 to Chumphon for about 460 kilometres. After that, use highway no.41 or 42 pass Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Songkhla, Pak-nam Thepa to Pattani. The total distance is around 505 kilometres.
*Bus : There are service of regular and air-conditioned buses of Transport Co., Ltd. The buses leave from the Southern Bus Terminal to Pattani every day.
*Train : From Hua Lamphong Station, there are both express and rapid trains to Pattani (Khok Pho) Station everyday. From Pattani Station, buses and taxis are available between Khok Pho and Amphoe Muang which takes about 29 kilometres.
*Plane : There is no direct flight to Pattani. Visitors need to travel to Hat Yai (Thai Airways International provided round-trip shuttle bus (Hat Yai-Pattani) twice daily free-of-charge for passengers who make the reservation in advance). Alternatively, visitors can use regular bus or taxi from Hat Yai to Pattani for about 104 kilometres and traveling time is approximately one hour and a half. |
