BANG TAO
OVERVIEW |
At over eight kilometres long, Bang Tao Beach is the second longest on Phuket and is home to some decent budget and mid-range resorts and hotels. Don't be scared off by the super-luxury Laguna Complex which takes up the best part of half the beach as there are still enough budget digs to make Bang Tao worth considering.
A grouping of five-star hotels and a golf club, The Laguna Complex is built around a series of artificial lakes that are actually filled-in pits from Phuket's tin mining days , both Phuket and the Andaman Coast in Phang Nga province to the north were huge tin mining districts.
Much of the land was abandoned when the mines were tapped out and it wasn't till the tourists began to arrive that interest was revived in the area. To this day controversy surrounds ownership of some parcels of land in both the Bang Tao area and sections of Khao Lak. Corrupt politicians and other people of influence have, across the country, often tried to take advantage of Thailand's sometimes vague land title system and Phuket has some prime examples of this type of abuse.
But swathes of dodgy land deals shouldn't bother slowly bronzing tourists and Bang Tao is a fine area for a bit of bronzing. The beach is long and the waters calm. There's plentiful shade and in high season this area is a hit for water-sports.
Although you may not realise it, Bang Tao is a predominantly Muslim area and a few large mosques are located in the village back off the beach. If you do plan to wander off the beach and into the village, please remember to consider the conservative beliefs and dress accordingly.
While it is possible to swim at Bang Tao year round, in off season parts of the bay can get a bit of a swell and under-currents, particularly at the southern end of the beach. In high season the waters tend to be very calm.
The southern reaches of Bang Tao were badly damaged by the Asian tsunami,- permanently destroying some of the accommodation. Many other places though rebuilt and reopened fairly quickly.

BANG TAO TRAVEL TIPS |
Climate
There are only two seasons in a year. The rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of phuket is between September and October as they are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23oC and 33oC.
