RAWAI
OVERVIEW |
Rawai Beach is located at the southern tip of Phuket. It is much less touristy than nearby Kata and Patong beaches and an excellent place to experience some real Thai culture. Rawai Beach is known for its seafood and scenery, but not for its swimming. As with nearby Ao Chalong, this is a beach where forgetting your swimmers is no big deal, the sand is littered with refuse, too many longtails and the water is anything but crystal clear. Nevertheless, Rawai is still a great place to visit on a daytrip just to treat yourself to a beachside seafood feast.
The length of beach is lined with numerous vendors cooking up fresh seafood storms. Most speak at least a little English and many have limited English menus, but it's easy enough to just point out what you want. Meals are served either on small tables surrounded by recliners or on rattan mats that you can relax on, all under the shade and well appointed looking out to sea.
With a few cold drinks a seafood meal on Rawai can stretch out to an afternoon and the costs are very reasonable , but a fraction of what you'd pay on Phuket's far more popular Patong beach.
Rawai beach itself is only used to moor fishing boats and swimming there is not recommended, but there are a number of excellent beaches which are only a few minutes away by scooter/tuk tuk. In particular Promethep Cape is recommended for excellent swimming and snorkelling, although neighbouring Nai Harn beach is popular with the older crowd.

RAWAI TRAVEL TIPS |
Climate
There are only two seasons in a year. The rainy season (May to October) and the hot season (November to April). The low season of phuket is between September and October as they are the wettest months. The best period for a visit, is from November to February, when it is possible to see the clear blue sky, feel the fresh sea breeze and marvel at the crystal clear water while lying on powdery, palm-fringed beaches. Average temperatures ranges between 23oC and 33oC. |
