OVERVIEW |
Khong Chiam is the easternmost district around 60km of Ubon Ratchathani. Located at the confluence of the Moon and Mekong Rivers, this sleepy town offers a quiet escape from the big smoke of Ubon Ratchathani. The neighboring districts are Sirindhorn, Phibun Mangsahan and Si Mueang Mai. To the east across the Mekong river are the Laotian provinces of Salavan and Champasak.
The point where the two rivers meet is known as the 'Two Colour River', and sure enough, depending on the flow and heights of the two rivers, a distinct difference in colour is evident from the river's bank due to the differing sediment levels in the Moon and Mekong Rivers.
Aside from the two colour river, there is nothing much to see in Khong Chiam itself, although it is an excellent base from where to visit the nearby Pha Taem National Park, the border town of Chong Mek and two nearby dams.
Historically, the area was Khwaeng Mueang Khong Chiam. The head of the khwaeng was Upahad ,who reported to the governor of Ubon Ratchathani. In 1903 the office of Khong Chiam was moved from Ban Na Kho to Ban Na Pho Klang.
In 1912 the office of Khwaeng Mueang Khong Chiam Tai was moved to Ban Na Ueat, Tambon Na Kham. In 1914 was moved again to Ban Dan Pak Mun, Tambon Suwan Wari Noi. Finally the district office was moved to Rong Kham Ma Chok in 1957.

GETTING IN - OUT

* Car: There are two ways to get into Ubon Ratchathani from Bangkok. You take Highway No. 1 to Saraburi and Highway No. 2 to Nakhon Ratchasima, then use Highway No.226 and proceed to Ubon Ratchathani via Buri Ram, Surin and Si Sa Ket, for a total distance of 629 kilometers.
Or you travel along Highway No. 1 and Highway No. 2 unil arriving at Sikhio, then turn into Highway No. 24 and proceed to Ubon Ratchathani via Chok Chai, Nang Rong, Prasat, Det Udom and Warin Chamrap.
* Bus: The buses depart from Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal (Mochit 2 Bus Terminal) to Ubon Ratchathani every day.
*Train: The regular trains depart from Bangkok's Hua Lamphong Railway Station to Ubon Ratchathani every day.
* Plane: The Thai Airways has several daily flights connecting Bangkok with Ubon Ratchathani. There is also Air Asia operating two flights every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday to Ubon Ratchathani International Airport. |
